What’s New and Improved in AVG Internet Security 2013?
1. Even Greater Ease of Use
We've put a big emphasis for this release on making our product easy to use, for both our less-technically savvy customers, as well as those that wish to have greater levels of control with their PC protection. We've completely overhauled our interface, simplified our Firewall and improved our install experience
2. New User Interface
Our new User Interface has been developed with extensive involvement from our customers, helping us build something that meets their needs specifically, while providing greatest ease of access to the most regularly used settings. The UI has been designed to complement the new Windows® 8 Metro style, to deliver a UI that will help users feel most at home within the Windows 8 environment.
3. Simplified Firewall
We have looked at the settings of our firewall, taken feedback from our customers as well as data from our product analysis, and taken steps to remove settings which are not used by customers, to deliver an overall simpler firewall, which still retains all of the strength and first-class protection.
4. Better Install Experience
Our install experience is even easier both for customers who want to take the recommended path, as well as the custom install for more advanced users. This includes improvements for the many customers who first experience our product via a free trial.

We are always striving to reduce the footprint to ensure that our protection engines are having minimal impact on system resources.

Improvements in the startup time of PCs using Internet Security 2013 are 26% faster than compared to Internet Security 20122. The user interface also loads over 200% faster.
3. Improved Scan Time with AVG Turbo Scan
Scans are faster than ever with AVG Internet Security 2013. We have introduced a new feature, AVG Turbo Scan, which dramatically shortens security-scanning times thanks to a smarter scanning sequence that follows the order in which files are saved to the hard drive. Scan time improvements have been measured independently at 36%2.

Detection rates always need improving to ensure we are staying ahead of cybercriminals.
2. File Reputation
The new AVG client will check with our cloud service and report prevalence of certain files on user’s computers. AVG will then use this information to improve the AVG product’s detection capabilities (heuristics, behavioral detection etc). Customers need to be part our product improvement program in order for us to access their data.
AVG Detection Methods
The key to AVG’s efficiency in detecting infected files and exploits is the technology’s multiple layers of protection. Files are pre-screened, and those deemed unnecessary for virus analysis are excluded to enable faster scanning.
1. Signature-based detection
Works to match files to known virus signatures - a sequence of bytes known to be characteristic of a specific virus. Detailed analysis is then performed to identify the exact infection.
2. Polymorphic-based detection
A common method for detecting known viruses, this is used to determine new variants of recognized viruses, even if the new variant behaves differently. This method is particularly effective in the detection of macro viruses and script viruses.
3. Heuristic-based analysis
The third layer for detecting viruses is heuristic analysis, which looks at the way software behaves in order to identify whether or not it is malicious. This allows it to detect a virus, which is not included in the internal virus database.
4. Behavior-based analysis
This is the fourth layer for detecting viruses. This patent-pending technology looks at how software behaves to determine hostile file behavior and preventing their execution.
Keeping Updated
It is vital to keep your antivirus software up to date. AVG’s 2013 products make it easier than ever to keep up-to-date and protected against the latest threats via manual and automated processes.
Update files are available even when a large number of requests to download updates are sent to AVG’s servers.
